FOODS
One of the most important things you can do for your animal is to provide excellent food. Commercial foods, though
chemically balanced, have the disadvantage of often using rejects from the human food industry. In addition, it is processed
at a high temperature under steam pressure and this may damage some of the fragile nutrients and change proteins so they are
more likely to stimulate allergies.
At Pawlitics, we carry (and special order at no additional
cost) dry, canned, dehydrated and raw frozen holistic foods for dogs and cats. Our foods are free of corn, wheat, soy,
by-products, artifical preservatives and dyes. They are either made with human grade or organic ingredients. We carry grain
free and hypoallergenic foods and treats.
We consult resources like the Whole Dog Journal which is an excellent
magazine that annually produces articles on the top dog foods available in the marketplace. We are proud to carry a number
of the foods listed in the report.
The Raw Diet for Dogs & Cats
The Raw Diet is really just that, raw food. Some people also include raw bones. The Raw Diet
is also known as the B.A.R.F. Diet (Biologically Appropriate Raw Food or "Bones and Raw Food”) developed by Australian
veterinarian Ian Billinghurst. In it's "purest" state it’s raw food, raw eggs, veggies, whole fish (yes,
raw) raw bones and meats—no kibble/canned food, just raw “people food”.
Controversy
This is a controversial feeding practice (there are support groups) and several books have been written
about it. There’s a lot of concern about possible bacteria in the bones particularly, hence the controversy. But those
that love it, really love it! Advocates say their pet
has more energy, better health, arthritis and allergies are gone and more. Naysayers say it’s too dangerous. You be
the judge. Some of the potential benefits of
the Raw Diet for dogs include getting your pet back to a more natural diet which reportedly helps to keep them young and free
of degenerative diseases. The Raw Diet is more natural than a diet of processed kibble and canned foods.
Pros
More natural than processed foods Possibly cleaner teeth Potential health benefits, less chronic pain/disease Possible longer life span Less exposure to pesticides and preservatives in processed foods Cons
Opponents warn of possible bacteria in the bones Not as convenient as dry or canned food—though frozen can help Making sure you “get it right” and your pet is receiving
all the nutrients he/she needs (although not an issue with commercial frozen raw foods)Research is necessary
